Daniel Erban

1951 - 2017

Throughout his career, Israeli-born Montreal artist Daniel Erban explored the world’s darker side in a quest to better understand it, and himself. His often-ironic work eschewed pure abstraction and academicism; in his words, it “scratches the viewer’s retinas and bleeds into their consciousness.” After obtaining a BFA from Concordia University (1980), he turned to printmaking (Atelier Circulaire, Engramme). Erban participated in over two hundred solo exhibitions and many international printmaking biennales. His works are included in private and public collections throughout Canada and in Europe, as well as collections from the Musée national des beaux-arts du Québec, Bibliothèque et Archives nationales du Québec, the Canada Council Art Bank, the Art Gallery of Alberta, and the University of New Brunswick. Erban also received a master’s degree in science from Concordia University (1983) and taught mathematics at John Abbott College in Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue.
